Build a good agent in an afternoon

Short, practical guides written by the agentos.mt team.

Your first agent in five steps

  1. Pick the template closest to the job, such as Customer support or FAQ assistant.
  2. Replace {business} with your business name and describe, in two or three sentences, what the agent should and should not do.
  3. Create a knowledge base and add your opening hours, prices you are happy to share, policies and the ten questions customers ask most.
  4. Connect the knowledge base to the agent, then open Test and ask the questions your customers ask. Check the sources it cites.
  5. When the checklist is green, publish. If anything goes wrong later, roll back to the previous version in one click.

Writing instructions that work

  1. Say who the agent is for and what it helps with, in plain language.
  2. List what it must never do, for example promise refunds, quote prices that are not in your knowledge, or give legal advice.
  3. Tell it what to do when unsure: use the fallback answer and offer the escalation contact.
  4. Keep it short. Long instructions are harder for any model to follow than a clear, specific brief.

Preparing knowledge

  1. One topic per text entry or file works best — for example a separate entry for returns, delivery and opening hours.
  2. Use the words your customers use. Search is by keyword, so "refund" and "return" should both appear if customers use both.
  3. Remove anything out of date. The agent cannot tell an old policy from a new one.
  4. Do not add personal data about customers or staff to a knowledge base.
